RETRO

Having started with a simple portrait style photo of the subject, I wanted to create a landscape image that also made the subject pop out more from the background. I used the crop tool in photoshop to resize the image to a landscape and then used content-aware fill to create a background of leaves that matched the original. Then, I selected the subject and separated her from the background, to keep her image bright and vibrant while changing the hue, saturation, and brightness of the background to give it a retro and sepia look.  The bright red shirt contrasts strongly against the beige background, and immediately draws the eye of the viewer to the subject. Meanwhile, the tan skin tones and purse tie in a repetition of the background color to make the foreground, while standing out, still unify with the background.

Revisions - after reviewing my work and getting peer feedback, I made the following revisions:

  • I edited the bush in the background to have more texture and less uniformity throughout.

  • I Enlarged the "messy" parts of the bush directly behind the subject.

  • I added a faint shadow at a down and left angle from the subject and blended it into the background.

  • I cleaned up a few areas around the hair that had the original colored background and replaced them with the color of the edited version using a variety of brush tools.

(please note that this revision is slightly blurry because of technical difficulties with the jpeg. Still working on resolving the issue.)
